All Creatures Great and Small

*I write these blog posts from my heart..about my work with the First Nations People, about my teachers such as Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, about my time spent with terminally ill patients, about life off the grid in northern New Mexico. Though in some ways, I write for myself, I try always to share information and experiences that may be helpful to others, that are universal.

shisakina-enjoying-the-morningI think this is going to be a short post…it’s mainly a wish or actually a plea for contributions to help us feed our animal family.

With 2 exceptions all of our animals are rescues…. puck-leg-upredmanOur horse, Redman we rescued from Texas 3 summers ago when due to extreme drought, there was no grass or haywolfdog-eve-all-32 wolfdogs, Sakina and Apollo we rescued from death row where they were set to be killed  because they had some percentage of wolf and maggiemorning-light-8162 cats, Maggie & Phantomphantom stare as well as 2 kittens, Osa & Selenaselenaosa-2 were rescued from shelters or from owners unable to keep them.

This beautiful video below is the story of our wolfdog,Sakina ..twice rejected, we rescued her this past August. I think this little film portrays on the deepest level..the meaning and the feeling of rescue.

This past year I have learned a lot about generosity and its opposite: Those who give even when they have nothing and those who take even when they have everything.

I have rescued animals and people for quite a while now and for most of that time, I haven’t needed to ask for help… but life changed as it often does.

I have heard the spiritual teacher, Eckhart Tolle refer to our life/life experience as if it were a tapestry. Woven together in our tapestry are things like our health, our family and friends, relationships, finances etc –   our tapestry seems complete and whole, everything seems to be working and we can relax. Then quite suddenly something happens, something is ripped away leaving a large hole: terminal illness, sudden death of a friend or family member, ending of a relationship, loss of a job… As Eckhart says  “If you’re not being challenged by life right now, just wait a little. It’ll come.”

My story is here  if you are able to contribute and even if you’re not, it’s a good story I think.

I am most concerned about the 2 horses right now.horsessnow-oct-13 Winter is coming and they will need a lot of  hay. An amazing woman who has a wolf rescue center outside of Albuquerque shares freezer-fulls of meat with usdiy-freezer-whole that is donated to her rescue center… so the wolfdogs are pretty well provided for.

*As I try to pay off a lot of debt, I am living on about $600 a month now…it’s very difficult –try it sometime…it’s an experience not to be forgotten  and it’s all explained HERE

For everyone who contributes, there is something in return. I never take without giving back in some way. SEE BELOW. And when you contribute, just indicate under ‘comments’ which of these gifts you want, the size if applicable and your name and address..there is no charge for shipping.

I have also posted below a very short Pay it Forward film . I know that are many people  are depressed, angry and sad following the US election and one way out of this, I what Alice Walker wrote in a recent essay: ” We can awaken completely. The best sign of which will be how we treat every being who crosses our path. For real change is personal.”

For everyone who has contributed, who has encouraged me this past year who has not abandoned me, in the most difficult year I have yet experienced…I thank you with all my heart. Someday you will understand how much your support meant.

THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS/ON THE LAND & the good the bad and the ugly

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

~Wendell Berry

I started to write this the night before the ‘election’ but I felt too discouraged..too exhausted from the hate and anger that was reaching out and poisoning everyone and everything. But now that the ‘election is over, I want to write something about what I believe REALLY MATTERS or should matter to all of usangelfire-pond-fall16 and that is the Land, Nature, the Earth~ Our Home.

So I’m not going to say very much about the election or politics-I’ve never felt that was the way to creating a better world anyway and although there may have been some positive changes made in the past, they seem mostly negative to me ie: there have been so many school shootings and other mass killings during this past administration that people have come to think of this as the norm.

And I am posting a film below which I think is relevant and important. I came across it when I was researching the candidates running for president, one in particular and in my research, much of what is in this film came to light. *This information is not hidden from people, it is easy to find and though horrifying, repulsive, and disgusting, it is true. I  guess you have to take ‘the red pill’ [as in The Matrix] to watch it. “The red pill and its opposite, the blue pill, are popular culture symbols representing the choice between embracing the sometimes painful truth of reality (red pill) and the blissful ignorance of illusion (blue pill).”

This Spanish phrase certainly applies as you’ll see if you watch the film, “Conspiracy of Silence :” Dime con quien te juntas…. Y te dire quien eres! which means “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.”

And so as Anishnabe Elder, Dave Courchene said a month ago when speaking to a group of elders and chiefs in Manitoba:dave_speaking “Prepare for the hard times that are coming. Don’t waste time in trying to fight a system that will not change. Rebuild yourself, your families and your nation, with your way of life the Creator has given you.”

And these are the words I am living by, now in these very difficult times on Earth.

This morning when I got up it was pretty cold so I made a fire in the wood stovewoodfirefan and then I walked outside in the early morning light and the air smelled like pine and wood smoke….chimney smoke.jpgThe Purification from all the negativity..back to basics..back to the land….back to what is common to all of us no matter the culture, race or religion…we come from.

I have always felt connected to nature. Every summer from my baby years..beach family

til I was 16, me:lake:teenI spent at my grandparent’s summer cottage, called Avon Lodgemimime-avon on Lake Michigan. When summer came, my cousins and I would ride in my grandmother’s purple Cadillac, feeling so excited,  as she drove us from suburban Chicago to the cottage, taking the old road that goes along the lake. The first time we could see the lake was ‘the moment’ and the minute we arrived at Avon, we took our shoes off and ran down to the beach, to touch the water.rb endless blue

I go back there often in my dreams.

So nature has often healed me from the pain caused by the humans in my life and lately from the outside world. And it can heal us all.

For many years I lived in Texas-in Dallas, Houston, Galveston, Austin and finally in the Texas Hill Country. For the last several years that I was in the Hill Country, I lived in very remote area “far from the madding crowd”

Mill Creek  Vanderpool Texas

Then 7+ years ago I moved to a small, rural, mountain community in northeastern New Mexico and life changed again. I bought property that was off the gridsunrise-122011 and although I had lived in a rural setting in Texas, now I was living even more closely connected with nature: depending on the Sun for electricity, the wood for heat which I love …I could never go back to an electric, on the grid home.

I learned a lot the first few years I was here: about solar energy, about growing food, about living in tune with the seasons and about living in a multicultural community and as a way of bringing all of this together, my son and I set out to make a documentary about sustainable livingandymules and the culture of northern New Mexico. The result was ON THE LAND~Together with the Earth.on-the-land-poster-2

As we interviewed people who represented the 3 primary cultures of northern New Mexico: Native American/Pueblo, Hispanic and Anglo, we brought together a lot of practical information as well as the wisdom of the elders, the art…sunrise

and the music

We put the stories of those we interviewed in chapter form. Some of the chapter titles are

I write about this now because I believe that in the future many more people will choose to live this way or they may have no other choice. Many of the people who have seen On the Land have told me that it took them back to their childhoods, to memories of their grandparents, to what really a simpler and more beautiful time.

Last night when I got tired of writing, I made a fire in the wood stove-this is one of favorite things about winter here: sitting in my fur covered rocking chair, watching the fire- and I thought this blog contains both the beautiful and simple things in life and the ugliest [the film: Conspiracy of Silence] It’s the choice I guess we all have…which life to live…and whether to take the red pill or the blue pill.

Below is a trailer for ON THE LAND. You can buy the DVD here or here which comes with a Jonathan Warm Day Poster: Together with the Earth.on-the-land-poster-2 Below the trailer is the film Conspiracy of Silence.

On The Land ~ trailer 1 from Andy Pickard on Vimeo.

Conspiracy of Silence is a 56-minute unreleased documentary film produced by Yorkshire Television in 1994. It implicates many government officials in positions of power..the trail leads all the way to the White House. This is about the past but it is happening in the present. It is happening NOW.

The subject of the film is an alleged child sexual abuse ring involving a number of prominent Nebraska persons, including Lawrence King, an Omaha banker, political fundraiser, and convicted felon.

The documentary was scheduled for broadcast in the United States on cable outlet Discovery Channel on May 3, 1994.

However, it was never aired. Proponents of the film claim that it was withdrawn due to political pressure; neither Yorkshire Television nor Discovery Channel commented officially on why it was not aired.
